The History of Cadillac

Vintage image of the first Cadillac automobile prototype from 1903, highlighting Henry Martin Leland’s legacy and Cadillac’s early innovations in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1902, Henry Martin Leland unveiled his first prototype of what would become the iconic Cadillac. On October 17, 1903, the very first Cadillac rolled off the assembly line at a Detroit, Michigan automobile plant. Leland named the brand after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of Detroit. Cadillac quickly became one of the world’s earliest automobile brands and was the second luxury marque in the U.S., following GM’s Buick.

By 1909, General Motors (GM) acquired Cadillac, solidifying its place as one of America’s premier luxury carmakers. Cadillac led the industry in innovation, pioneering advancements such as full electrical systems, the clashless manual transmission, and steel roofs. The brand also developed three influential engines, with its V8 engine setting the enduring standard for American automotive performance.

Our Rich Heritage: The Story Behind Patrick Cadillac

Exterior view of the Patrick Cadillac dealership building in Schaumburg, Illinois, featuring a modern facade with large glass windows and the Cadillac logo prominently displayed.

In 1904, Hanley Dawson IV’s great-grandfather forged a unique connection with the legendary Henry Ford in Detroit, Michigan. Working across the street from Ford’s manufacturing plant, he began selling used cars returned to the plant and soon earned the privilege to sell new vehicles directly from the assembly line.

By 1907, he secured the first new Ford franchise in the Midwest—marking the start of a lasting automotive legacy.

Fast forward to 1951, Hanley Dawson Jr. took the reins of the family dealership. Two decades later, in 1971, the business moved to Chicago’s bustling Rush and Ontario Street corner, where Hanley Dawson Jr. proudly operated the first and only Chicago Cadillac factory retail branch. Together with his son, Hanley Dawson III, they ran Hanley Dawson Cadillac through the early 1990s.

In 1977, Hanley Dawson III launched the Patrick Dealer Group, named after his youngest son Patrick. This marked the birth of Patrick Cadillac, located at 526 Mall Drive, Schaumburg, IL.

Over four generations, our family-owned and operated business has grown, yet the spirit of family and commitment to our customers remain at the core of everything we do across our Chicagoland dealerships.
