Unlike gas-powered vehicles, electric vehicles (or EVs) utilize electric motors powered by electricity from batteries or fuel cells to operate. If you’ve ever wanted a vehicle that slashes fuel costs, produces zero tailpipe emissions, and can travel long distances on a single charge, an EV might be for you. Read on to learn more about all-electric vehicles, and why they’re quickly becoming such popular options across the automotive industry, and why there is so much excitement about the Cadillac LYRIQ (pictured).

Brief History of the EV Industry

You might be surprised to find that electric vehicles aren’t new. About one-third of vehicles on the road in 1900 were electric. Unlike other types of cars, these all-electric models operated quietly, were easy to drive, and emitted fewer pollutants. The fact was, however, that gas-powered cars were more affordable and easily available, and for a while, electric cars were pushed to the side. Times have changed, however. Due to the increasing demand for higher fuel-efficiency, eco-friendly performance, and greater range, electric vehicles are experiencing a resurgence in today’s automotive market.

Types of EV Charging

Naturally, one of the major perks of owning an EV is never having to worry about filling up at a gas station. There are, however, different types of charging methods. Here’s a quick breakdown of each charging level:

Level 1

  • Slowest charging method
  • AC voltage
  • Up to 2kw
  • 4 miles of range/hour
  • Household outlet

Level 2

  • Faster charging method
  • AC voltage
  • 3.8kw to 19kw
  • 25 to 60 miles of range/hour
  • Appliance outlet

DC Fast Charging

  • Fastest charging method
  • DC voltage
  • 24kw to 350kw+
  • 100 miles of range/10 minutes (can vary due to different factors)
  • Extremely high-voltage public charger

There are thousands of public charging stations throughout the U.S. and Canada, so you can feel confident that wherever you venture, a plug is within range. You can also find these stations easily via apps and GPS.

What Are the Ownership Benefits of EVs?

The benefits of owning an electric vehicle don’t stop at reduced fuel consumption. Compared to cars with conventional internal combustion engines, EVs stand apart by offering the following advantages:

  • Torque is generated instantly and acceleration is immediate.
  • EVs utilize fewer moving parts, which makes maintenance and repairs easier and more cost-effective.
  • The battery pack is strategically placed for more even weight distribution and smoother handling.
  • Charging vs. refueling — no more trips to the gas station and paying by the gallon.
  • Zero-emission performance contributes to a healthier environment and a better future for all.
